California currently has almost 8 million older adults or persons with disabilities – by 2030 more than one million older adults in California will require some assistance with self care.

When accounting for actual living costs, California has the highest poverty rates in the US with 56% of California seniors and people with disabilities living below the poverty level.

The recession ended several years ago, but our most vulnerable citizens aren't making progress. We must undo recession-era cuts to SSI/SSP and ensure our most vulnerable citizens have access to appropriate care.

SB 512 and AB 1434 are critical steps in the right direction. By endorsing this petition, I throw my full support behind these two bills.
SB 512 lays the groundwork to establish subsidies to help middle income seniors and people with disabilities.

This legislation helps California plan for our growing aging and disabled population and provides a financing mechanism for these services. SB 512 starts the process of developing and implementing this plan.

AB 1434 increases individual SSI/SSP grants from $889 per month to $1,099 per month.

Today’s total payments are, in many cases, still less than they were 5 years ago. AB 1434 raises SSI/SSP for California's most vulnerable.

It is simple, our senior population is rapidly and disproportionately growing . We live longer and are outliving our assets with more expensive healthcare needs. This translates into a crisis that impacts every age group. It negatively impacts our economic, social, healthcare, government, business and education systems. The reports, studies and data gathered to produce them have been consistently sounded the warning alarms and there is no more road left to kick this can down.

Needed support for our disabled and our seniors

I am a Clinical Social Worker and I see frail elderly in their homes. My work enables them to stay in their own homes. Please pass a budget which supports their needs. Thank you to the legislators who passed the bills which gave Seniors access to Cal Fresh!

We must speak up and support each other in our struggle. I was at the combined Seniors and Disable citizens. We asked that SB 512 and AB 1434 be approved.

Necessary Bills to ensure future security of seniors and persons with disabilities

Shamila Chand

Hello. My name is Shamila Devi Chand and I am a constituent.

I am calling to support the Disability and Aging Capitol Action Day being held today – MAY 23, 2019 at the Capitol.

I could not be there in person, but I am urging you to support SB 512 (Pan) to develop a blueprint for long-term supports and services in California.

I also urge you to support the $1 million budget request to do an actuarial study to determine how many people will need these services, what they will cost, and how California will pay for them.

I also need you to support AB 1434 (Kalra) to increase the base grant for SSI/SSP and bring recipients out of poverty by raising the base grant to 2008 levels and reinstate the state COLA beginning Jan. 2020. We must include the funding for this in this year’s budget as well. Thank You.

Because poverty destroys home life for seniors and disabled and effects their families, too. We must do something so that the vulnerable are protected and their kids and grand kids grow up with dignity that provides strong, stable personality.
